How to Play Tafl Viking Chess

The game pits two unequal sides against each other in a tense strategic duel. The attacking black pieces always move first, followed by alternating turns.

• Movement: All pieces, like the rook in chess, move vertically or horizontally any number of squares across the board. They cannot move diagonally, jump over other pieces, or pass through the central throne or corner fortresses (which are special squares).
• Capturing Pieces: You capture enemy pieces by a pincer movement. On your turn, if you move a piece to sandwich an opponent's piece between two of your pieces (or between your piece and an empty throne), that opponent's piece is removed from the board. Capturing is optional, not mandatory.
• Special Squares: The central square, known as the "Throne," can only be occupied by the defending king. It is always hostile to attackers. The corner fortresses (in some variants) are safe havens only for the king.
• Victory Conditions: The game's objective depends on your side:
  • Defenders (White): Win by safely escorting your king from the Throne to either a designated board edge or one of the corner fortresses, depending on the variant.
